Check your heating!
With colder weather on the way, now is the perfect time to make sure your heating is working properly.
Spending a few minutes checking your boiler and radiators now could help spot any problems early, before you need your heating most!
Your heating checklist
Turn your heating on for a short time and check that:
- Your boiler starts up normally
- All radiators warm up evenly
- Your thermostat is working correctly
- No unusual noises come from your boiler or radiators
- You know how to use your heating controls
- The area around your boiler and any vents is clear
When your heating is on, your radiators should feel warm all over.
Please let us know if you notice:
- Cold spots on radiators
- Radiators that stay cold
- Some rooms warm up, while others stay cold
Top tip: keep furniture, clothes airers and other large items away from radiators. This helps heat move around your home more effectively.
While you’re there!
Test your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide alarm (if you have one).

Worried about heating costs?
We know that energy bills can be a big worry.
However, running your heating for a short time to check it’s working properly shouldn’t make a large difference to your energy bill, and it could help us spot any problems before colder weather arrives.
Reporting issues early may help prevent a boiler breakdown later in the winter - helping you stay warm, comfortable and safe when you need your heating most.
