Making the most of your heating

When temperatures drop, it can be tempting to turn your heating on and off throughout the day. However, keeping your home at a steady, comfortable temperature can often be a more effective way to stay warm.

We also recommend:

  • Heating the rooms you use most often
  • Keeping internal doors closed to stop heat from escaping into rooms you're not using
  • Moving furniture away from radiators so that heat can circulate properly
  • Closing curtains when it gets dark to help trap heat in
  • Using draught excluders around doors
  • Opening your curtains and blinds during the day to make the most of natural sunlight

It’s also important to let fresh air into your home, even when it’s cold. Opening windows for a few minutes each day allows moisture to escape, helping reduce condensation, damp and mould. A dry home is often easier and cheaper to heat than a damp one.

Simple ways to save energy

Small changes can add up and help to reduce your energy bills.

Why not try:

  • Only boiling as much water as you need in the kettle
  • Washing clothes at lower temperatures, where possible
  • Waiting until you have a full load before using your washing machine or dishwasher
  • Turning appliances off instead of leaving them on standby
  • Wearing extra layers, warm socks or slippers before turning up the heating
