Top tips to keep your home warm and comfortable this winter:

  • Close curtains when it gets dark to keep the heat in. You could also draught-proof windows and doors - gaps let warm air out and cold air in!
  • Turn radiators down in rooms you don’t use often. Lowering your heating can also help to cut costs, but try to keep your home at a minimum of 18°C to help avoid damp and mould from developing.
  • Layer up and get comfy in blankets! Heated blankets are great for keeping warm, but can be a fire risk - make sure to follow these safety tips!
  • When cooking, keep lids on pans - this can help to reduce energy use. Using slow cookers or batch-cooking where possible can help to reduce oven/hob time.
  • Only boil the kettle with the amount of water you need.
  • Do full loads in the washing machine/dishwasher rather than many smaller loads.
  • Turn off appliances fully when not in use (rather than leaving them on standby).
  • Opt for a shower, rather than a bath (where possible). Baths often use more water and heating.
  • Get creative with gift-wrapping. Reusing gift wrap or packaging helps your pocket and the environment!
  • If you’re away visiting friends or family over Christmas, turn your thermostat down or set timers, so you’re not heating an empty house.

Last week, we held a Money Matters Facebook Live event!

Our panel included colleagues from our partners, Longleigh and Clean Slate, who are also available to offer support if you need it.

During the session, we answered your questions on money, budgeting and managing bills in real time.
