Better heating, bigger savings

Warmer homes

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) tells you how energy efficient your home is – ‘A’ being the highest rating and ‘G’ being the lowest.

77% of our homes are currently rated EPC C or above. This means they should be at a good thermal comfort level (the desirable level of warmth your home should be at, without it feeling overly hot or cold).

With the average rating for homes in the UK at EPC D, we’re proud to know that most of our homes are warm, energy-efficient and well insulated.

We’re working to make sure all our homes meet at least an EPC C rating by 2030. If your home isn’t there yet, our ongoing retrofit programme will help get it there. While improvements won’t happen overnight, our retrofit programme will help by upgrading your homes with better loft and wall insulation, new doors and windows, heating upgrades and solar panels where possible.

We’re always interested to hear your opinions and views. We recently carried out a survey where we asked customers to rank topics to do with sustainability in order of importance. This gave us helpful insight and shaped our new environmental strategy, helping to make sure our values and focus aligns with what matters most to you.

From the survey results, we saw that your home being affordable to heat is a top priority for you. This aligns closely with our own commitment to energy efficiency, which was great to see! Through our ongoing retrofit program, we’re working hard to make sure your homes need less energy to stay warm and comfortable.

Savings on energy bills

Heating and insulation upgrades, as part of our ongoing retrofit programme, have led to a significant reduction in energy bills for customers.

Improvements include:

  • Replacing old heaters with new Air Source Heat Pumps, a renewable energy system that extracts heat from the outside air and uses it to heat your home and hot water, even in cold weather. Air Source Heat Pumps are cheaper to run and are more energy efficient than traditional heating systems, like a regular boiler.
  • Adding pressurised hot water systems - a system that draws directly from the mains water supply, unlike traditional systems that use gravity from a cold-water tank. Pressurised systems result in a stronger flow to taps and showers and are less likely to freeze in the winter.
  • Installing Solar Panels (a device that converts sunlight directly into electricity), where appropriate.
  • Better ventilation in bathrooms and kitchens. This allows fresh air to move around your home, leading to better air quality and helping to prevent issues with damp and condensation.
  • New loft insulation (a material installed in the roof space to prevent heat from escaping). Loft insulation helps to keep your home warm, leading to lower heating bills and a more comfortable living space.

Our customers living at Sawyers Court have already seen significant reductions in their energy bills, following home upgrades as part of our retrofit programme! In one case, the household’s daily energy costs typically ranged from £8 to £12. Following the completion of these works, their daily energy usage was around £2.30 – making a huge difference to the household’s bills!
