How to spot scams
Scams – it seems like there’s one waiting for you every time you open your emails or the phone rings these days.
There’s an increased risk of scammers targeting housing association customers at the moment, who say they can help you with disrepair claims, but will instead take your money and run.
If you have a problem in your home (including damp, mould and condensation) that you’d like us to fix, please contact us first and we’ll be happy to help.
The golden rule with scams is that, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, but here’s a few red flags that you should be aware of if you get contacted by a company that says they can help:
They tell you there's “No win, no fee”
This is a baiting tactic to make you feel like you have nothing to lose by at least exploring the issue or just “having a conversation” with them about it. In reality, any company offering this kind of deal will usually sell your case on to another solicitor, where you’ll start to rack up legal fees.
They turn up with no appointment
Unless it’s an emergency, we’ll never turn up without an appointment or letting you know we’re in the area.
If anyone knocks on your door saying they’re working for Stonewater, you should ask for ID and phone us to make sure they are who they say they are. If they can’t provide ID or you’re just not sure, do not let them in to your home.
They ask you to “Click here to claim your free prize”
One of the easiest ways fraudsters have been able to make their money is through online scams that deliberately play on your curiosity.
They might be asking you to
- Cancel a large payment
- Claim a refund on your road tax
- Track a missing parcel
- Reply to claim your free prize
- Login to secure your account
All these are familiar, but you’d be surprised as to how often they work. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is, so don’t open the email, reply to the text or click the link if you’re in any doubt.
