Going for gold: What we’ve done to reduce our carbon footprint

In March 2022, Stonewater achieved the SHIFT gold standard for our work in helping to reduce our impact on the environment for our homes, our customers and our business.

Stonewater was rated the third highest out of 40 housing associations in the country

Here’s how we did it:

Engaging with our customers

With rising energy prices, it’s been more important than ever to support our customers with their bills and make sure they can stay warm through the winter. We’ve hosted online events, created videos, had virtual consultations and created new resources to help customers become more energy efficient at home.

Take a look at our Energy Hub to see how we’ve been supporting customers to become more energy efficient at home.

Managing our supply chain

We’re working much more closely with our partners to make sure that we are doing everything we can to reduce our impact on the environment. Our Contractor Sustainability Forum helps us to have open discussions with our suppliers where we can share ideas and information about how we can reduce our carbon footprint which has been a key driver in helping us save around 30 kilograms of carbon dioxide per home compared to 2020.

Improving our homes

We’ve been updating our homes as part of our objective of making sure that all our properties have an EPC rating of C or above by 2030. More than 75% of our homes are now at this level thanks to projects that are happening across the country. We have also accessed funding to help update heating systems and improve the energy efficiency of our homes, such as installing heat pumps and retrofitting properties. This work is continuing so that we can make our homes cleaner for the environment and get gas and electricity bills under control.

People powered sustainability

We’re investing more time into sustainability by bringing people into specialist roles at Stonewater that can support customers with their energy. These new roles will allow us to think more about reducing our carbon footprint in all aspects of what we do, helping us to tackle fuel poverty and do our bit for climate change.
